چکیده

background: lead is an industrial heavy metal that can decrease sperm motility. objective: the aim was to investigate the protective effects of calcium against lead on motility of spermatozoa. materials and methods: in total 40 adult male swiss white mice were randomly divided into 5 groups (control, lead of 1st wk, lead of 2nd wk, lead/calcium of 1st wk and lead/calcium of 2nd wk). the lead groups of mice were injected by a single dose of lead acetate (200 mg/kg) intraperitoneally. lead/calcium groups of mice were injected by a single same dose of lead acetate along with three doses of 80 mg/kg calcium chloride. the control group of mice was injected only with same volume of distilled water through the same route. mice of 1st and 2nd wk groups were sacrificed through cervical dislocation one and two weeks after injections respectively. results: mean of the progressive motile spermatozoa of cauda epididymis in lead/calcium group of the first week was higher than the lead group of the first week and this difference was significant. there was not any significant difference among weight of testes and epididymides of all groups. conclusion: it can be concluded that calcium can decrease the effects of lead on sperm motility.

Ascorbic Protects Testicular Oxidative Stress and Spermatozoa Deformationsin Male Swiss Mice Exposedto Lead Acetate

Lead is the known environmental contaminant adversely affecting the male reproductive system in human and experimental animals. The cytotoxic effects of lead on male reproductive system involve the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative damage in tissue. The higher quantities of ROS in testicular tissue detrimentally affected developing germ cells so as to produce verities of...

Evaluation of frozen thawed cauda epididymal sperms and in vitro fertilizing potential of bovine sperm collected from the cauda epididymal

In the present study, the fertilizing potential of semen recovered from slaughtered bulls epididymis was evaluated after cryopreservation, by conventional techniques and flow cytometry methods. The cauda epididymal was dissected and sperm were recovered and evaluated for volume, sperm concentration, and membrane and acrosome integrity using a flow cytometer. Sperm fertility potential was tested...

Interaction of lead acetate with calcium channel blockers in formalin test and formalin-induced inflammation

In this study interaction of three types of calcium channel blockers nifedipine, diltiazem and verapamil on the effects of lead acetate on two types of pain (nociception and inflammation) induced by formalin in mice were examined. In order to study nociception, formalin test was selected because of greater resemblance to clinical pain. Lead acetate (50, 75, l00, 125 and 150 mg/kg) administere...

Protective effects of celery (Apium Graveolens) on testis and cauda epididymal spermatozoa in rat

Dear Editor Infertility is one of the health problems that will have a negative impact on the individual, social and economic and is seen in 10-15% of couples (1). About 40 % of the issues involved with infertility are due to the man. Male sperm cells count nowadays has decreased dramatically in comparison with those who lived 50 years ago (2). Causes of infertility in men are included: oligozo...

P-159: Effect of Silymarin on Viability, Motility and Mitochondrial Memberane Potential of Ram Spermatozoa Treated with Aluminum Chloride

Background: Aluminum, as an environmental pollutant, can exert oxidative stress on spermatogenesis and sperm morphology. Silymarin, an effective substance extracted from Silybum marianum, is a potent antioxidant which inhibits oxidative stress. Due to the damaging effects of aluminum on the male reproductive system as well as sperm and the role of silymarin, this study was performed to investig...
